At Simuway, we are excited to share the details about one of the most iconic landmarks coming to the Greece expansion of Euro Truck Simulator 2— the Corinth Canal. This impressive feat of engineering, which separates the Peloponnese Peninsula from mainland Greece, is not just a beautiful sight, but also a historically significant marvel.
A Brief History of the Corinth Canal
Let’s first take a quick look at its historical background. The Corinth Canal connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf, spanning a narrow 6-kilometre stretch. Its strategic importance has been recognized since the 6th century BCE, although the technology of the time made its construction impossible. The canal as we know it today only became a reality thanks to the invention of dynamite in the 19th century. It was completed in just three years, from 1891 to 1893, saving ships from a grueling 400-kilometre detour around the Peloponnese Peninsula.
Standing 84 metres deep, the Corinth Canal is a breathtaking sight, attracting countless visitors each year. Its unique conical shape gives it a width of 75 metres at the top, narrowing to just 21-24 metres at the bottom, with water levels reaching 8 metres.
How Will It Look in ETS2?
In the upcoming Greece expansion for ETS2, our favorite simulation game, the Corinth Canal will be recreated with remarkable attention to detail. The map designers have faithfully rebuilt the major bridges spanning the canal—two dedicated to road traffic and one for the railroad.
But it’s not just about the canal itself. Players will be able to take in the surrounding scenery as well, with a nearby gas station, a rest stop for truckers, and even a dedicated viewpoint where drivers can admire the canal in all its glory.
