More Precision Farming coming to Farming Simulator 22

The “Precision Farming Project” continues with a new and improved DLC for Farming Simulator 22. Including the initial versions features like soil types, soil sampling, variable rate applications and economic analysis, the focus of the new DLC will go further.

Advanced precision farming technologies will be implemented: To increase the sustainability of your farms, optical sensors will be introduced. Thus, allowing a reduced application of herbicides as well as organic and mineral fertilizers.

Successful project is growing bigger

The first version of the Precision Farming DLC for Farming Simulator 19 was a great success, and was downloaded one million times world-wide on PC and consoles. If you missed the news on the initial Precision Farming DLC, here’s what you should know:

Initiated in 2020 by John Deere and funded by EIT Food, Europe’s leading Food Innovation Initiative, the projects’ goal is to provide knowledge regarding sustainable farming technology. Implementing Precision Farming in Farming Simulator is one of EITs steps to increase awareness.

Besides EIT Food and John Deere, various partners from the European Union are also part of the project: The University of Hohenheim (Germany), the University of Reading (Great Britain), and Grupo AN (the largest cereal cooperative in Spain). New to the table this year is the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research from the Polish Academy of Sciences to promote the technology among young farmers in Eastern Europe.

Free DLC releases next Spring – more at FarmCon

The above-mentioned partners are key to the continuation of the project. The first DLC was evaluated thoroughly by agricultural experts, students, farmers and others. Of course, player feedback was an important factor when deciding on how to advance the project. That’s why you can also expect some improvements to the already existing features based upon your feedback.

While we’re focused on the upcoming release of Farming Simulator 22 on November 22nd, the new version of the Precision Farming DLC is scheduled to release in the Spring of 2022. All owners of Farming Simulator 22 on PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will be able to download it for free.

Make your virtual farm more eco-friendly and sustainable: The Precision Farming DLC, a project funded by EIT Food and led by John Deere, introduces new gameplay mechanics based on real smart farming technology. Take soil samples with the John Deere Gator and the ISARIA SCOUT to identify four different soil types. Learn about pH-values and nitrogen content in your soil before you improve the yield by dynamic application rates to save seeds, lime, fertilizer, fuel and, in the end, money.

A new Precision Farming tab in the menu gives you all the information you need to optimize yield and hold control over your finances. A soil map with special filters shows you the current state of your soil and every action you take is reflected on the economic analysis overview. New UI elements and a live mini map give you additional information and control when working the fields. With an RTK station on your farm, your helper will perform actions more efficient, too. Don’t waste time and money – make your farming operation smarter!

Soil Types, Soil Sampling and Yield Improvement

Not only are there four different soil types (loamy sand, sandy loam, loam and silty clay), you also have to take different pH levels and the content of nitrogen into account when improving your yield. First, you start with sampling the soil to identify its properties and then go on to lime and fertilize with dynamic application rates. The John Deere Gator and ISARIA SCOUT are included in the DLC. We’re not done yet…

“Being part of the project from the very first minute, I’m now keen to see player reactions,” comments Thomas Frey, Vice President & Creative Director at GIANTS Software. “Together with John Deere, we achieved a great start and I’m really looking forward to an even better integration and more features coming in the future.”

Per our announcement, this is a 2-year-project. Meaning, after releasing the Free DLC on ModHub, we’re not done with Precision Farming. More features are planned to follow after precise, academic and scientific evaluation by the involved parties. This includes, for example, the University of Reading and the University of Hohenheim and other EU parties.
